Although very much a metropolitan area, Long Hill offers great outdoor spaces for recreation and enjoyment throughout the year. The Long Hill Township Parks & Recreation Department operates and manages several community parks and trail systems in the community. Matthew G. Kantor Memorial Park (915 Valley Road, Gillette) offers many great amenities, including a basketball court, bocci and horseshoe courts, canoe launch, natural area, playground, soccer and lacrosse fields, tennis courts, and walking paths. Stirling Lake Park (915 New Vernon Road, Gillette) is a favorite spot for residents throughout the year. Swimming and relaxing on the beach are available during the summer in this public lake. In the winter, the lake becomes an ice-skating rink. Both the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Passaic River County Park are partially located within Long Hill. These stunning natural parks offer the perfect respite from the hustle of daily life. Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge has 7,768 acres of diverse natural habitats. This National Natural Landmark is a great spot to explore the great outdoors as it is home to hundreds of birds, wildlife, and plant species. Passaic River County Park covers 825.49 acres along the river. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, fishing, hiking, and picnicking during the warmer months and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

Students in Long Hill Township who are in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade are educated through Long Hill Township School District. The 3 schools in the district are Gillette School (759 Valley Road, Gillette), Millington School (91 Northfield Road, Millington), and Central Middle School (90 Central Avenue, Stirling). To avoid the often heavy traffic along these major transportation routes, Long Hill has three train stations which operate NJ Transit’s Gladstone Branch. Residents can easily commute from Gladstone to Hoboken through Gillette Station (Valley and Long Hill Roads), Millington Station (Division Avenue), and Stirling Station (Central Avenue and Main Street). For anyone needing to travel farther distances for business or pleasure, Newark Liberty International Airport (3 Brewster Road, Newark) is located only 25 miles away.
